„direct refugee support“ April 2020 / let the people go
Dear friends and supporters,
We are a group of people who want to actively help refugees
who are stuck at the Balkan route because the borders
were multiply closed off.
The Balkan route is closed off and hermetically sealed since 2015 by fences, barbed wire, the military and by the police.
The European politics of isolation make it nearly impossible for people fleeing to get through to northern and western Europe. At Lesbos, Samos,
Chios and other Greek Aegean islands, ten thousands of refugees
are waiting and still more people are crossing the sea in search for a
„better“ life in Europe. They flee
from hunger, misery, forced marriage, persecution and hunger in their
countries of origin. If refugees succeed to reach land,
they are put in camps again.
Still, thousands of people are fleeing through Greece,
Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia etc.
They don’t receive enough food, water, medicine,
hygiene products, warm clothes or blankets. They have to wait there for months,
under inhuman conditions and inactively, for a possibility to get away from these places so hostile to survival.
Often, getting further is only possible through long foot marches passing green borders or through taking long rides, hidden in the back of trucks for many hours.
If they reach the east European countries, there are
neither support nor perspectives, so people continue
their journey to other European countries. Many have relatives,
friends or family in the countries they want to reach.
There are many NGOs providing emergency aid along these routes. In
camps and cities, kitchens are being set up to supply refugees with warm
food and drinks. Tents, blankets, sleeping bags, warm
clothes and hygiene products are being collected, stored and distributed.
Doctors and paramedics offer first treatment;
information and internet access are organized. Another focus of
of this work is border monitoring, in order to document pushbacks, for example, and make it public.
In spring 2020, we want to support these structures on site for several weeks
by cooking, offering a first medical treatment, supporting
border monitoring and establishing other information structures. To do so, we need support in form of financial donations. With the money, we will buy food, material, medicine
and pay travelling costs. We hope we can count on your support.
Let us oppose the deadly isolation politics of the EU
together.
