Decolonial Update from the Polish-Ukrainian border, March 10

The following text is a report from people from another structure:

We are a loose group of individuals and leftist groups who have been in the Przemyśl area in the last 10 days in order to support BIPoC refugees and offer rides to Germany and other places.

The situation in the camps at the border worsened a lot since last week. BIPoC, most of them non-ukrainian citizens, are facing a lot of racism from the Polish police, the aid organisations like Caritas, local helpers, general population and even many drivers. Not to talk about Polish hooligans patrolling the camps and trying to threaten BIPoC refugees. In the whole structure of the camps, the media and the aid system, there is a strong divide in „good and bad refugees“ and BIPoC experience full blown racism in a situation where they are extremely vulnerable.

The camps are much more militarised since this week, Police is controlling at entries and exits and drivers have to register in order to bring refugees to other places. However, the camp administration is not allowing drivers to transport non Ukrainian citizens anymore. That means that they get stuck in the camps and will be transported to other European countries as quota refugees. This does not only prolong their stay in the camp structures and discriminatory systems of aid, but it is especially dangerous for all refugees without a legal status in Ukraine, as they risk being transferred into detention centers.

Individual drivers who want to transport BIPoC out of Poland will very likely not succeed or it takes a long time to find ways to do so. This is why we have started to built a small infrastructure in order to coordinate needs for lifts with drivers and help refugees out of these camps. There is a big need for drivers to come to Przemyśl and to bring BIPoC refugees to countries outside of Poland and connect them with safe accomodation and legal support.

The rumour that the streets and infrastructure in the border region around Przemyśl is overcrowded is a (right wing) trope to prevent drivers to come.
